9 Myths Debunked

The phrase “personal development” can be interpreted negatively in several ways. Personal development is selfish, or it is narcissistic, or this is only for the self-centered or the rich. But the truth is that personal development is a process of goal setting and follow through to make one’s life better physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, or socially.

The following list further explains why these thoughts – and other myths – are not true and why working on your own personal development is a positive move.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT…

  1. Is Selfish – Trying to improve any part of yourself is not selfish, it’s positively positive! Getting into better physical shape, mastering your emotions, becoming more centered and grounded, and improving social interactions, are all positive concepts toward self-improvement. Choosing to make positive changes in your life shows that you are making good decisions to improve your life.
  2. Is New-age-ish, Fancy Thinking” – Making the choice to improve your life is positive, grounded thinking. There is nothing fancy or new age about it, except for the fact that you have decided to change your mindset. This requires positive thinking and commitment. Nothing fancy about that.
  3. Is For Rich People – Anyone can create a personal development plan. You don’t need a fancy gym, expensive equipment, pricey reference books, or high-dollar consultations. All you need is the desire to change, and the will power to commit to making those changes. Information and plans are available online and on website like BestSelfHelpSolutions.com.
  4. Is Temporary – Personal development is a process that you can make a permanent part of your life. As you commit to make changes, those positive changes become a part of you, a part of your life. They will last as long as you are committed to them. And why wouldn’t you want to stay committed to positive improvement in your life?
  5. Requires Willpower – In a way, this myth has some truth to it. A personal development plan requires commitment and self-control. But these steps are born out of enhancing what you are already good while building better habits.
  6. Is For the Ambitious – You don’t need to be overly ambitious or a ‘go-getter’ to succeed with a personal development plan. All it takes is a willingness to change, a commitment to creating a realistic plan, and the desire to stick to the plan.
  7. Demands Too Much Change – One thing you can count on in life is change. Change is going to happen in life, but a change that you initiate and control, is a good change. When you create a plan, you are in control of the changes that plan initiates. So, keep track of the changes – which will mostly be positive – and celebrate those positive changes in your life!
  8. Requires Peak Performance – This myth is absolutely untrue! You can be that 97-pound weakling with a desire to build a healthy, and attractive body, and you can do it! You start with what you have, and you build on it. Step-by-step, at your speed and ability.
  9. Focuses on Your Weaknesses – Any plan recognizes your weak areas and works to improve or strengthen those weaknesses. The plan does not focus on the weaknesses but strives to change those weaknesses into strengths.

Now that you know many of the negative myths about personal development, you can acknowledge and avoid those negatives and move forward to positively develop your life.
