Food Shortages-How To Deal with Them

Especially During a Pandemic

It makes no difference what causes a food shortage – supply chain, production issues, drought, war, disasters. If we run low on food, or can’t get certain items, then we are not happy. If it continues, then we will not be healthy. If it really continues, then we will not be alive. None of these results are good. So, what do we do?

Many people have begun ‘prepping’, that is stocking-up in preparation for shortages, disasters, or wars. My father built and stocked a ‘bomb shelter’ in our basement in the 1960’s, in preparation for a nuclear war, that thankfully never happened. But we were ready. (It doesn’t matter that any nuclear fall-out would have seeped through the non-sealing metal door and killed us, but God-bless my dad, we were as ready as anyone could be in 1960.)

So, besides building a bomb-type shelter and stocking it with items bought in bulk, what else can you do to prepare for a food shortage? Here are some practical nutritional tips to keep you and your family in better health during food shortages.

Heavy-up on supplements. We eat food basically to fill our stomachs and hopefully for the nutrients it provides. So, if we aren’t getting enough food, we probably aren’t getting enough nutrients. That’s where supplements come in. Many Americans are already taking supplements to enhance or compensate for the nutrients in their food or lacking in their food. But here are some basics:

  • Multivitamin-This pill contains the basic vitamins recommended for overall health
  • Vitamin C-Boosts immunity, enhances brain function, and a powerful antioxidant
  • Vitamin D-Helps build bone, educe cancer cell growth and control infections
  • Magnesium-Supports muscle, nerve function and energy production
  • Fish Oil-A good anti-inflammatory, reducing pain and stiffness
  • Green supplement-Supports the immune system and energy levels
  • Garlic oil-Reduces cancer effects and cardiovascular and metabolic disorders
  • Coconut Oil-Improves cognitive function, metabolism and hair and skin health
  • Curcumin-Manages oxidative and inflammatory conditions, arthritis, and anxiety
  • Zinc-Aids in creation of DNA, growth of cells, building proteins and healing tissue

Body-building supplements can be used to replace meals if necessary. These include BCAA’s, egg protein, and whey protein.

Heavy-up on protein. You need protein and fats but can reduce your intake of carbohydrates. Here are some protein and fat suggestions:

  • Fish, especially halibut, salmon, and sardines
  • Skinless poultry
  • Beans
  • Eggs
  • Nuts
  • Coconut oil
  • Olive oil

Intermittent fasting. This does no sound pleasant, but if the shelves are empty you are going to have to make some adjustments, so get ready. Here is a simple plan:

  • Start with one meal a day
  • Increase your water intake
  • Try a plan like 16/8 where you eat for eight hours and fast for 16
  • Cut down on sugars and carbohydrates.

Finally, here are some other tips to avoid food shortage:

  • Ration your food
  • Shop when you can
  • Order a little extra each shopping trip
  • Shop online

Whenever there is an oncoming snowstorm or an impending disaster, just keep your cool. Yes, things will be unsettling for a while, but it will come back to normal and there is no reason to panic. Keep a 3-day supply of food and toiletries and you should be able to survive every event except that nuclear winter that my dad prepared for – and thankfully, never happened.

You could also take the opportunity to turn a little discomfort into an opportunity to look inward and do some self-evaluation. Is it time to lose weight? To get into better shape? To change the way you have been eating? Whatever the case, turn this temporary negative in to a life-changing positive for you and your family.

Why Do We Have Pets?

To a pet owner, this headline would seem ridiculous. To them – and there are millions of them – having a pet is the same as having a child. A child that doesn’t talk back to you and gives unconditional love. And that is the first reason we have pets – unconditional...
