Guardian Moms, The New Survivalists

The survivalist movement has moved into the mainstream as tech execs and suburban ‘Guardian Moms’ have begun to prepare for catastrophe. Luxury bunkers, ‘Apocalypse’ trucks, and a growing survival-oriented food industry are thriving. This blog will describe some of those survival businesses, but first let’s talk about the catastrophe’s that these preppers are preparing for.

In another blog we talked about the natural disaster that could befall our country and the world. Floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, drought, rising seas caused by climate changes, fires, volcanic eruptions, and more. These events seem to be happening at a more frequent pace and many ‘experts’ blame climate change. The rise or fall of temperatures due to the actions of humans, mainly harmful emissions into the atmosphere, destruction of forested lands, and other human activities. This may or may not be the reason, but aside from a worldwide change in attitude and lifestyle, there is little an individual can do about it. But you can be prepared for adverse conditions. More on this later in the blog.

Prepper or survival necessities

A nuclear event was a big concern in the 1950’s, and we thought that we could hide under our school desks and be saved from nuclear fallout. The concern of nuclear destruction looms even larger today as many unstable countries now possess nuclear weapons and there seem to be fewer deterrents to the people whose fingers are on the nuclear button. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail on this option.

A very real concern would be the damage or destruction to our electrical grid. Vince Flynn wrote a book called “Total Power” in 2020, in which he described such an event. The United States electrical grid was attacked by terrorists – with inside information from an American electrical grid consultant – and power was out in America. It didn’t take long for Americans to run out of water, food, and patience as the good guys worked and fought to regain control and turn back on the lights. In the book, the good guys did win, but what would you do if you lost power? Not for 24, 48 or 72 hours, but for a week? A month? Longer?

This issue, a very real and tangible concern for the average American, may have been a deciding factor in getting the attention of Americans to begin prepping. Prepping at the most basic level is being prepared for any sort of disaster or catastrophe. House fire. Flooding. Loss of power. Squatters. So now we have Guardian Moms as a new category of survivalists.

There are many levels of prepping or surviving.

At the basic level you have all of your important papers – social security cards, , deed or mortgage papers, passports, and copies of your driver’s license – in a fireproof and hopefully, portable safe. Something that can withstand a fire or flood or can be picked up and carried out of the home in an emergency. It also means having a ‘Go Bag’ or ‘Ready bag’ created and ready to grab in an emergency. In your backpack Go bag you will have enough food, water, clothing, and medical supplies, to last 2-3 days. Just enough to get you through the aftermath of a home fire or flood, natural disaster, or power outage.

A Guardian Mom – or your average homeowner – can also be prepared by stocking up bottled water, canned foods, flashlights, batteries, solar rechargeable lanterns, and medical supplies. Also have a can opener as your electric can opener will be inoperable. A rule of thumb is to be prepared for at least 3 days without power or help. This equates to at least 2 gallons of water per person. Also have chlorine dioxide tablets to purify additional water if needed.

For the more advanced prepper, your list may be a little more extensive, extravagant, and expensive. Your get-away vehicle – or Apocalypse truck (from Apocalypse Manufacturing) – is a $100,000 tricked-out truck that is supposedly ‘impenetrable to external forces’. This is necessary to get to through the Mad Maxx-post-disaster world to you own bunker in the badlands of South Dakota, where you will live in relative sunless comfort until it is safe to open your blast-proof doors and come out to see what’s left of the world. Sounds a bit gruesome, doesn’t it?

Companies are offering interior designed and well stocked bunkers with all of the comforts of home in about 2000 square feet of concrete protected comfort. But with enough money you can add features ‘comparable to a mega yacht’ with price tags exceeding $2 million. You can have theaters, swimming pools, saunas, deluxe bedrooms and furnishings, and whatever you heart desires to live in luxury below ground or in a solid rock casing, safe from the perils of the world.

But if living in a bunker is not your idea of living, and if you are just concerned about surviving if SHTF happens, (Shit Hits The Fan in prepper-speak), then start preparing – in a logical, practical way. You can get educated by reading other blogs and checking out the products at BestSelfHelpSolutions.com. Read Lisa Bedford’s blog, ‘The Survival Mom’. She is one of the original Guardian Moms.

Here are some companies that offer prepper products:

For some, prepping is a lifestyle. Live to survive, survive to live. The last of the rugged individualists. But for most of us, prepping just makes good sense. Who wants to be completely without food, water, shelter, first aid, or any of the needs we consider as basic? The answer is, probably no one.

So, being prepared for emergencies makes sense. Food, water, batteries, clothing, shelter alternatives, ways to communicate and travel, places to go to be out of harms way. Taking care of ourselves, our families, our friends. It makes sense and it starts with a conscious effort to do so.

Make a plan, communicate your plan, gather and store supplies, and be ready. If you don’t have to face an emergency situation or a post-disaster environment, great. If you do, you are ready and you can take care of yourself and your family.
